Thankful

gobble

Ask any kid what their favorite holiday is and they will probably say Christmas.  I think I was the only kid ever to say Thanksgiving.  I don’t know what it is about the holiday that makes me love it so much.  Maybe I am a total fat kid and its because of the delicious food my mom cooks.  Maybe I am a glutton for punishment and enjoy the screaming and bickering that always goes along with a family get together but always ends in peace and naps on the couch.  Maybe its the togetherness that the holiday symbolizes.  Either way, its my favorite day of the year, the second being Tamale Day and that’s a whole other post.

The past couple years Thanksgiving dinners have been more and more difficult to execute.  My mom is beginning to get tired of doing all the turkey day work (and since I usually work on T-day, I don’t help), and this year my dad can’t help since he’s still recovering.  I’ve been coming to the realization that my parents are getting…old.  I knew it would happen one day, but when I used to picture them getting old, I pictured myself married with kids by 25, not single, working a job with no future, supporting myself, and going to school part time.

I guess its time to step up to the plate (pun intended) and start putting in the hard labor on turkey day…and I’m really nervous.  This is like grown up stuff.  “Oh hey guys this year Thanksgiving dinner is at my place.”  Barf, that’s probably going to be me next year!  This year I agreed to have my mom order me around the kitchen so I can do some stuff hands-on, learn the ropes.  Hopefully next year I’ll be cooking thanksgiving dinner like a grown up.

I guess this is just another part of growing up.
